Houston we had a problem!
September 28, 2008 on 6:57 pm | In Everything Else | No CommentsActually the city still has a horrible problem. Power is still missing in many places throughout the city. Our neighborhood was finally visited by crews yesterday and power was restored today around noon. I am thankful to finally be back home but there are so many still without power that I am somewhat miffed at the powers that be for the poor response in some areas.
The west side was far less damaged than the east and yet the poor response on the west side shows that the concentration on southern areas and eastern areas brought about little improvement for east Houston but in the west the lighter efforts showed huge results. If they had just started in the easier areas to begin with the whole west side would probably have been up in a few days! By making the plan fair they made everyone suffer far longer than they had to.
It is far past time that Houstons electrical infrastructure move underground. The cost of putting the power lines underground will nowhere exceed the cost of the clean up and restoration of power throughout the city which was nearly 100% without power. Paying 11000 crews to clear trees from powerlines 24hours a day and to rebuild destroyed transformers and lines and poles will cost us far more than burying power lines would have cost after Alicia in 83. Humans never learn…
